Marimekko

Marimekko is a Finnish design company renowned for its bold and colorful prints in both fashion and home decor. The company was founded in 1951 by Armi Ratia and her husband Viljo Ratia. Marimekko gained international recognition in the 1960s when their vibrant patterns became synonymous for the fashion and design trends of the era.

One of Marimekko’s most iconic designs is the “Unikko” (poppy) print, created by designer Maija Isola in 1964. The founder of Marimekko, Armi Ratia, believed that it was not possible to faithfully capture the true essence of real flowers in print, therefore Maija designed Unikko to be an abstraction of a flower rather than a photorealistic rendition. This bold floral pattern became a symbol of Marimekko’s design ethos and has remained a staple in their collections ever since.
